where-do-these-folks-learn-how-to-drive

I sometimes feel bad that I tend to look at all other drivers in Northern Virginia as completely incompetent, but they just keep proving it to me. This morning I pulled up to an intersection in my neighborhood, stop signs at all points, and proceeded to watch a woman in a minivan go blowing right on through, without even so much as a slowdown at the sign.

And folks wonder why I take extra time at stop signs before I go through an intersection…

Oh how I fear - perhaps too strong a word, but still - the intersections while riding in a city, lit or not. I try never to be the first through an intersection when the light changes. I want a car on my left side, if I can manage it, when taking off. While rolling through a green with traffic stopped left and right, I’m happy if all the cross lanes are blocked with stopped traffic. If they’re not, it’s eyes wide open time, believe me.

Still and all, it’s those damned left-turners that cause me the most despair. They’re never looking, and never seeing.

Yeah, even at lit intersections I wait before going - too many folks around here seem to think it’s perfectly acceptable to blow right through a red light - and I’m not talking the “pushing the yellow and damn it went red halfway through”, but it’s red long before they get there.

And today’s moron was making a left turn as well! It would have been an interesting crush of metal had I not seen her coming.
