We made it in one piece!!

And I am well out of range of potential nervous breakdowns, YAY!!

No unsecured wireless close enough to pick up a signal, and Speakeasy doesn’t have any dialup numbers down here, so I’ll just continue adding to this until I hit the coffee shop w/ free wifi. IT WILL BE LONG! I’m currently typing out on the screened porch, listening to the birds, enjoying the sea air (my skin is clearing up already), ocean sounds, a great breeze and recharging my PDA and dumping more music on it (totally should have gotten the 2G card, I will likely have to pare down my playlist a tad). We’re the third house back from the beach. The boys have both suggested that I just take the laptop and walk in increasing concentric circles around the house until I can connect. (For the record, I’m not the only one w/a laptop here.)

I apologized for being so anti-social, but Donald pointed out that they were immersed in Harry Potter and doing the exact same thing, just all in the same room.

Got on the road around 9:30 or so, (made the pharmacy in Burke!), a very relaxed trip once we got going with many stops, got in around 6 or so. Only real bad traffic was on the final approach, and even then, not too terrible. Bringing along my PDA was a very good idea, as my brother’s iPod FM transmitter just couldn’t quite cut it, and the internal speakers on mine are pretty good in a pinch, and he was impressed to see he could rebuild a good 90% of his playlist on my PDA - apparently we have very similar musical tastes.

The cast of characters this week:
Donald - aka little bro, aka dlove107.
Tev - Donald’s roommate, aka he who has stated he will be very disappointed if he doesn’t see a shark.
Lisa - Donald’s roommate & Tev’s fiancee.

Overall, very little seems to have changed in the last 5 years, which is nice. There is now a $2 escape tax to get out of VA (Toll on the “Chesapeake Expressway” just before you hit the state line), and a new drawbridge in Great Bridge which we got to see in action. Not too terribly much changed at the beach itself so far. Whalebone Surf Shop is now a mortgage co, hopefully they’ve just moved elsewhere, and there is a new Wings (cheesy beach shop) in Duck, and one of the banks has a new name. There is also a new little shopping center at the entrance of Southern Shores. Ports O’ Call restaurant is still here, which is one of my favs (yay estate jewelry store in the lobby!) that we’ll be hitting, just need to find out if Carolina Seafood & Jolly Roger are still around. We haven’t ventured that far south yet to see what’s around.

Saturday’s big excursions after getting in were to the market for some forgotten items, the pizza place to get dinner and to the beach to stomp around for a bit. Storm was coming in, very cool to watch the lightning out over the water. One Corona and I was down for the count. Fell asleep with all the lights on in the room and slept a good 12 hours straight.

Sunday has been filled with food making (we have enough ham salad for a week, WOOT and another WOOT for having the presence of mind to throw my mini cuisinart in the food box), more beach time (I’ve got tan lines already!), trip out to the Brew Thru (Tev is a NC beach rookie, had never seen one before, and well, we needed more beer), drug store for a few more forgotten items, and now it’s evening chill out time. The gents are in charge of dinner, as we picked up a hibachi so we could grill the hot dogs, so they get to play with fire for a while. Donald is making a dash to the closest quickie mart for ketchup as I completely forgot anything to put ON the hot dogs..

Lisa is hard core - she was out in the water up to her neck several times today. She also has the ability to snooze absolutely anywhere - even moreso tham me - we gotta make sure she’s well sunscreened up and doesn’t zonk out on the beach without supervision. :) The water is too cold for me to do much besides dunk my feet and cool off, but it’s at least not turn your toes blue cold. (I have experienced that down here once. If you go out one fine morning and find a load of expired minnows on the beach, don’t bother touching the water - it’s THAT cold.)

Just a couple hours in the sand and the skin on my feet is in better shape than it’s been in years. Two weeks and I’ll have gorgeous footsies. Glad I snagged some nail polish at the drugstore today. :)

One of the forgotten items was sunscreen, as the bottle I’d bought for the beach is apparently still sitting on the kichen counter. Ended up w/Bullfrog for kids, cause that was the only version of it they had in a spray bottle. My luck it’s something that sprays on purple or smells like bubble gum, LOL. But it’s SPF 40 and I can’t imagine it can actually figure out my age, so it should work…

The house is great, smaller than where we’ve stayed before, but perfect for 4 people. (Technically it sleeps 8, but that’s definitely pushing it.) Lisa is going to help me figure out if the young man across the street is jail bait or not, cause I just can’t be leering at a high-schooler…

The cable here has G4 TV on it, also known as “tech TV which was good and now it’s all damn video game reviews”… The boys are thrilled. The travel channel was also showing poker earlier - when did this actually become a spectator sport?? Even more hilarious - they have COMMENTATORS. I couldn’t help but spend some time mocking THAT…. “Well, Jim, if the flop doesn’t go his way, he’ll end up in 4th place.” “Exactly, Bob, and his girlfriend won’t sleep with him for WEEKS if that happens…”

Tev says I have quite the Lara Croft thing going w/my braid & my hat. He’s very sweet that way, overlooking the fact that I am just missing the insanely fabulous body and Brad Pitt on my arm. Lisa says the hat is “so totally me”. I will have to get pics of me in the hat at some point, as it really is quite the kickass hat.

sagamore is tending to the four legged brood while we’re gone, and called this evening - I’ll admit to a moment of panic upon hearing the ringtone, but all is well - his very sharp eyes saw my driver’s license sitting out at the house when he went to check in on the cats. Fortunatly, that is my old DL w/the old address that I am keeping as a backup should I lose my current one so I can at least have that piece of plastic in my wallet while waiting on a replacement. Major props for noticing something like that! And I couldn’t help but laugh when he said, “You sound like you’re unloading beer” - cause that was EXACTLY what we were doing at the time. He’s a good egg to not only be looking out for my critters, but me as well.

The wheels are already turning in my head about buying property down here - happens every time I am here without fail - more dangerous this time around as I have more means for it… But gosh, wouldn’t it be GREAT? I mean really, get a place w/decent rental history, that offsets some of the mortgage costs, yes, I should stop thinking about this RIGHT NOW… ;) But MY house would offer a wireless broadband internet connection… Tev says he’d DEFINITELY rent from me. :)

Storm is blowing through, we’ll probably be seeing this every evening - that’s July on the east coast. Think I got a few cool pics of the stormline, we’ll see when I get them off the camera.

My big plans for the next two weeks are to hit the Elizabethan Gardens, the Weeping Radish (most excellent brewery), the aquarium (this may be the only place Tev gets to see a shark), the Pea Island Nature Preserve, and very possibly going parasailing. Figure that should do something for that whole fear of heights, shouldn’t it? (That or I’ll be puking from several hundred feet up, LOL.) There will also likely be an all day putt-putt excursion one day this week.

It’s amazing how you kind of manage to forget everything that’s bothering you down here. Wish I could figure out a way to replicate that up in DC. Hell, if I could bottle it and sell it, I’d be a millionaire. I am seriously in my happy place. I’ve almost always been that way down here. I don’t know how it happens, but it does. (The only exception was the year my ex-h had bailed on me, that was a rough year, and it rained nonstop.)

YAY!!!

July 15th, 2005

I’ve decided I’m on vacation now. :) Closed all but ONE call. Have gotten some laundry done. Went to Glory Days for dinner. They recognize me there, just a matter of time before they know my drink of choice.

Training tomorrow- lets hope I don’t snore.

Oh, just a gentle reminder to my peeps going out for Harry Potter tomorrow night:

from

List 5 reasons you are a dork. And make them good reasons. Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud of how big a dork you are! Then pick the 5 biggest dorks you know and have them do the meme.

Note: I’m interpreting this as smiley dork things…

1. I create spreadsheets in Excel that are large enough that I can get up and go to the bathroom while they recalculate. And it’s not for work.

2. I was so giddy about the home network actually working, I said the following in an IM conversation with someone trying to figure out how to tell her bosses she would be moving: “totally unrelated, but HOLY SHIT BATMAN my two computers can see each other finally!!!!!!” Fortunately, she understood.

3. I spent 15 minutes trying to take a picture of the froggy on the deck last night, and it’s only a matter of time before it has a name. (Yes, really a toad, but the dog knows not to eat the froggy, if I change what I call it now, he has frog/toad legs for a snack…)

4. & 5. cause I’m just out of brains tonight: I am taking a laptop to the beach. ‘Nuff said.

I hereby tag , , , , and

Moxley’s new buddy:

(Do you know how difficult it is to take a photo of a frog at night?)

for her home networking answer of: Have you allowed the IP address of the laptop/PC to have acccess through the firewall (if you have one)?

Zone Alarm was the culprit and once I added the computers to the trusted zone of the others, I NOW HAVE A NETWORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It had randomly crossed my mind last night as I went to bed, and probably would have forgotten it today if you hadn’t mentioned it, . So, I’m happily sitting downstairs wathing TV and snagging files off the other computer.

I have hit the pre-vacation Zen spot of “I don’t give a damn!” Happened around 3 this afternoon. I no longer give a rat’s ass if I have to pass off the last of my calls or not. Plus, I work here at home tomorrow, so I get to sleep in a little too.

I’ve gotten a list of free wifi hot-spots at the beach. Seems that all of Manteo is covered. I can hit the brewery, the gardens and then check my email if I want. :-D

July 13th, 2005

OK, so I’m a reasonably intelligent woman who is fairly technically adept. Which of course means, that there is no way in hell I have been able to get the laptop and desktop to be able to see each other on the network here.

Well, not completely, the desktop seems to recognize the fact that the laptop is in the same workgroup, just can’t actually *get* to it, but the laptop can’t even get permission to see anything on the workgroup. What I don’t like about XP home is that you don’t seem to be able to lay out network permissions of “Computer X on Workgroup Y has access to these folders” - or if there is, I haven’t been able to find it just yet.

So, you can guess what I’ll be wasting my time on this evening instead of doing laundry. :)

The froggy that comes up on the deck in the evening is NOT a squeaky toy!!

Until I clock out for two weeks. Not that I’m counting.

Oh who the hell am I kidding, I am SO TOTALLY counting! Today was insane, 8AM to 7:30PM, busy, busy. I am soooooo tired tonight it’s not even funny. What’s worse, is that after drilling myself into the ground today, I started the day with 14 calls and only ended with 13… I have three days to close or dump them on others. I’d so much rather close them. I’ve now been told that no one wants to take my calls, cause if I haven’t figured it out, they must be hellish, LOL.

It would be an easier task if there were no new incoming calls over the next three days. Somehow I don’t quite think that is going to happen. However, being gone for a two week stretch pretty much nixes the possibility that the calls will still be waiting for me on my return. (Last time I was out a week, there was still one left when I got back.)

I really should be doing some laundry this evening, but I am just so completely and totally fried, there’s no way I could even stay awake through the wash cycle, much less get the stuff out of the dryer.

July 11th, 2005

All working now! Many thanks to for pointing out that there is an actual *switch* on the laptop… (Never had a laptop with wireless before and it shows!)

XP is all up to date, and as much as I would LOVE to stay up all night getting the rest of the software installed, I’d best go to bed.

Wheee, working wireless!

Getting there…

July 11th, 2005

Hardwired part of the router is working, but the laptop can’t find any wireless networks around - starting to wonder if I have to be right next to it or something.

Also, it appears that the laptop came preloaded with Office 2003, which wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the specs…

YAY!

July 11th, 2005

The router is working! Took some wrangling, but the hardwired piece is finally working. I did get all the non-beach stuff out of the car (I don’t see the point in taking the rest out just to put it back in four days. It’s not like chips will go bad sitting in the car.

I only cleaned up part of the office, but it’s better than nothing, and now that I have the router functioning, I’m gonna go downstairs and play with my new laptop. :-D

Just realized…

July 11th, 2005

12 years ago today I got married. 4 years ago yesterday, my divorce was final. What a weird ride my life has been.

Got home, discovered that I had not locked the back door and one of my four legged friends had gotten it open. Not wide enough that Mox could use the doggie door comfortably, so he just slid the screen open instead to go out… The cats were both still (or back?) inside when I got in and called for a head count, and I’ve not found any other strange animals wandering about the house, so all seems OK.

Got the laptop. :-D However, in a fit of restraint or self-flagellation, I don’t know which, I’m not breaking open the box until the car is emptied out from the Costco run and the office is cleaned up and the router hooked up.

In and out of Costco in 45 minutes, on a weekend no less. Yes, I am just that good. We now have a more than adequate store of vacation junk food at the ready!

OK, I should go empty the car and clean the office, but I’ve gotten a horrid attack of the sleepies, so I think I am going to go take a short snooze first.

July 10th, 2005

Slept in til 9:30. That felt sooooooooooooooooo good. :)

Have puttered about, caught up on intarweb stuff, and enjoyed my coffee for the past two hours. I’ve declared today a “no rushing about” day.

Next it’s off to Costco, pick up a few things from the old homestead, laptop shopping, then doing some laundry and lazing around playing with said laptop if it is in stock and I’m able to buy it today. The router arrived yesterday, so there will be some time spent figuring out how to hook that up.

4 days of work and a day of training and then I’m on vacation. Wheee!! I can only imagine how much I am going to get out of the training, given that it will be a) Friday and b) me along with 80 of my colleagues, so I honestly don’t know how in-depth they can get. I’ll already be on vacation mentally I am sure, so it should be interesting.

OK, so I suppose even with it not being a rushing about day, I should get going so I can at least get over to MicroCenter before they close at 6…

WOOHOO!!!

July 10th, 2005

The National Zoo has a baby panda!!!!!!!

Good day today, accomplished things, beeper didn’t go off, got some testing done for my client from last night, and a nice little b-day party. :)

Tomorrow I’ve got nowhere I have to be at any specific time, so I think I am going to turn off the alarm clocks and sleep in.

July 9th, 2005

All presentable with 5 minutes to spare. Go me! The laptop has been passed over and I now have a tote bag filled with probably several years worth of pay & leave statements. (I think Mom kept every swinging one of them.)
I do wish the animals wouldn’t look so bewildered when I clean. I HAVE done it before!!

I’ve picked out the laptop I am going to get - it was down to one of two Toshiba Satellites, and I realized one of them was the same one my Mom had for work, and that is one sweet machine, so it became the winner. It’s got a 17 inch screen which is truly obscene, but hell, you only get one go round in life. That, and if I’m using it for work, which I’m planning on, the bigger screen will be easier to read and such. Microcenter at least had it on display when I went browsing last week, hopefully they’ll actually have it in stock.

I’m feeling pretty damn good getting the kitchen & living room back under control - lets see if I can actually maintain that for more than 24 hours. :)

*yawn*

July 9th, 2005

Good morning campers… Congrats on making it to the weekend.

Once I finish up my coffee, it’s on to whipping the kitchen & living room into some semblance of order. One of Mom’s coworkers is coming by to exchange some papers for her laptop, and I’d best get the place looking a bit less like a tornado hit, lest they think I’m having a nervous breakdown and the house is going along with me. :)

Ah well, nothing that a couple trash bags can’t fix, given that the mess is 90% junk mail, soda cans & beer bottles. (No, I don’t know why it’s so damn hard for me to toss a beer bottle or soda can straight to the bin right outside the door when I finish it instead of setting it on the counter.) Oh, and running the vac is definitely called for, as you can tell with no troubles exactly where the dog & I sit for brushin’ time each night.

OK, coffee is gone, procrastination time over. Damn.

…without managing to do anything rash and get myself fired. This shift drives me nuts on a good week, but this week had me tearing my hair out. No matter, I’ve only got another hour of hoping the beeper does NOT go off, then I think I am going to go hunt down some dinner, preferably cooked by someone else.

Cat & Dog relations are going quite well. Target doesn’t hiss at Mox nearly as often as he used to, they all will hang out in the bedroom together at night and I don’t have to worry about all hell breaking loose, and today Mox got close enough to Snoopy to go…
*sniff*
*sniff*
*SLURP!*
Needless today, Snoop wasn’t exactly thrilled, but hey, what’s a little dog drool among friends. (Personally, I thought it was hilarious.)

Much to do this weekend. Cleaning. OMFG, cleaning. Birthday shindig tomorrow evening. Gotta fit in a trip to Costco. Start getting things in one place for packing. Tons and tons o’ laundry. This time next week I should be in a full on tizzy trying to make sure I remember everything. Maps came from AAA, along with a card for little bro. My replacement card did not. However, I’ve not checked today’s mail, so maybe it’s in there.

And fucking hell, I just checked my email and I have an email from a client needing help… They’d just hit the beeper anyway, so I’m back on the phone.

July 8th, 2005

London office all safe and accounted for, has posted, I can now relax.

Thank god it’s Friday

July 8th, 2005

The week has just kicked my ass up one side and down the other.

One week from tomorrow we’ll be on our way to the beach. So. Not. Ready.

So damn tired.

Though she hasn’t heard from him, his flight to Dublin was last night at 7:05 out of Bath, so he shouldn’t have even been in London today.

I emailed him anyway telling him “when bad things happen and you’re anywhere near them, you’re now under strict orders from the LJ chicky chicks to move heaven & earth to find an internet connection and check in.”, but I feel a hell of a lot better.

I noticed earlier one side of my face was itching, I just looked in the mirror and I have this big ol’ bug bite welt there…. Oh so attractive.

July 8th, 2005

Finally finished work for the evening.

I am just sick about what happened in London, but thankful that it wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been. I got an IM from someone this morning needing help tracking down a friend over there that posts on a forum he’s not registered to anymore, and that’s when it just hit me like a ton of bricks, remembering trying to track everyone down the last time we went through this. I keep obsessively refreshing my email for word on . God I hope he’s just getting shitfaced somewhere.

We have a London office, and have not heard word one as to their safety or well being - I don’t know if there is a reason for that, or if HR just thinks we’d all already know somehow. I do hope it’s just that they’re being mildly stupid - I emailed HR to ask if they had any word on things.

It’s also very weird to hear them talk about places you’ve been before. And in talking to one of my coworkers, I pointed out that hitting Kings Cross was completely out of bounds, cause that’s gonna freak out little kids to top it all off… (, see I did pay attention and I know where platform 9 3/4 is)

This morning on DC 101 they were talking about all this, and Eliot mentioned that when 9/11 happened and he talked w/his friends in other towns, he couldn’t help but wonder what it was like for someone that wasn’t here or in NYC. As he said today, it still pretty much sucks. Pretty spot on. For as obnoxious as he can be, he did well this morning.

July 7th, 2005

’s sister has not heard anything yet, but does not think he was in England today, and will let me know as soon as she hears something.

July 7th, 2005

I just remembered that I have an email address for ’s sister and have sent her an email - hopefully she will have good news.
